St. Andrew’s Community Announcements: March 14, 2012

Download the new StARS Termly Newsletter!!!

Dear Friends,

In our lectionary readings in the run-up to Easter, we continue our focus on Jesus and his saving work.  In the continuing uncertainties in Egypt it is good to know that we have a God who does not change and who can be relied on whatever else is happening.  The future is unclear for Egyptians, expats and the refugees among us, but we continue in the work we have been given to do, trusting in God’s provision.  If you would like to join us in prayer, don’t forget the skype prayer meeting on Tuesday nights – you can join in from anywhere in the world!

In the Guild Hall, the work on the bathrooms is now complete.  Last Sunday Fiona Cameron, the StARS Director, Marilyn Hansmann, StARS Accountant and church treasurer, and I, met with a kitchen contractor to commission the work on the Guild Hall kitchen.  We hope this can be done over the Easter break.  He was impressed and surprised that StARS manages to feed over 200 children each day from the current inadequate facility.

StARS has now produced its first termly newsletter which can be downloaded from the Media page.  It is well worth a read!

The number of people attending our Friday and Sunday services seems to have increased slightly and we look forward to a hopeful and enjoyable Easter season.  If  you would like to donate for Easter lilies, please see Gloria.

Hope you have a good week,

God bless,

Iain

St. Andrew’s Community Announcements: March 7, 2012

Dear Friends,

We had a very good service last Friday at which we had the privilege of hearing  Carolyn Schneider, one of our newer members and a professor at the Evangelical Theological Seminary, Cairo, preach.  The text and audio of her sermon can be found by clicking on the Media tab above and choosing “Sermons”, along with the audio of Mark Nygard’s address on Sunday Evening.

Work has continued, with a few hiccups, on the Guild Hall bathrooms, but we hope all will be completed when we arrive at church this Friday.

We seem to have only just begun Lent, but Easter will soon be upon us.  We will be having our Good Friday service at 10 am on Friday 6th April, followed by our Easter retreat to Anafora and then an Easter Sunday celebration back at St. Andrew’s on Sunday 8th.  The Cairo Christian Fellowship are also hosting an Easter Cantata, which will be sung in English, on the evening of Easter Sunday to which we are all warmly invited.  The exact time is yet to be confirmed.

Please pray for all those working in the StARS program at this time.  The continuing uncertainty in Egypt is having its toll on us all, but especially on those working with the most vulnerable.

Thanks, God bless,

Iain

St. Andrew’s Community Announcements: March 1, 2012

Dear Friends,

Happy St. David’s Day to any Welsh people out there!

We had an excellent pancake lunch on our “Shrove Friday” last week.  Quite a few new people came along and there were plenty of pancakes to go round!

Work has started on the church bathrooms in the Guild Hall – causing some disruption to StARS as the girls are having to use the teachers’ bathroom upstairs!  However, it should all be over in a few days and we will have new shiny toilets with hot water!!! The work is being paid for with a grant from the Vogalaar fund and the rest of the cost is being covered by the Cairo Christian Fellowship.  Thanks to them for their generous assistance in this!

We are now in the season of lent and Carolyn Schneider, one of our newer members and a professor at the Evangelical Theological Seminary, Cairo, will be preaching this Friday.  Text and audio of some sermons is now available on this website, click on “media” and then “sermons”.    This week we also had the first meeting of the new Church Council: new members Emmanuel Omoniyi  and Pamela Chase were welcomed to our meeting.

This Friday is the last opportunity to sign up for the Easter Anafora Retreat, so make sure you do so if you would like to join us!  You also need to indicate if you would prefer a single or shared room.

Hope you have a good week,

God bless,

Iain

St. Andrew’s Community Announcements: February 22, 2012

Dear Friends,

This evening we had a great time as we welcomed the people of All Saints’ Cathedral and Heliopolis Community Church to our joint Ash Wednesday Service.  Rev. Mike Parker from All Saints’ preached and Pastor Mark Nygard led the service and celebrated communion as we gathered in the chancel and overflowed into the nave for this penitential service.  More trouble errupted in the street outside the church towards the end of the service, and gunshots were heard.   However, we remained for refreshments and were able to all leave safely around an hour later.

The Ash Wednesday service was videoed and will probably be viewed by tens of people.  Last Saturday, another service was filmed and was viewed by many millions.   This was the funeral of Whitney Houston.  I caught it by accident and ended up watching for nearly three hours.  It was carried live, without interuption on BBC and CNN and was an incredible testimony to Jesus and his victory over death, watched by people from all over the world, many of whom would never have otherwise heard.  You can watch it in its entirety on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqq-V134aO8  Our, less exciting, Ash Wednesday service will be available to view soon.

This Friday we have our “Shrove Friday” pancake day!  Instead of sharing pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, which is the British tradition, we will be sharing pancakes following the service on Friday.  Remember to bring pancakes and toppings to share.  We will have microwaves to warm them up!

On the building front, work will start on the church bathrooms tomorrow, first the Ladies’ and then the Men’s!  Soon we will have beautiful clean bathrooms  – with soap and hot water!!!

Please pray for us all as we enter the Lenten season and as we prepare for the run-up to Easter.  Remember, we have our Easter Anafora retreat – sign up this Friday if you would like to come!

Have a good week,

God bless,

Iain

St. Andrew’s Community Announcements: February 15, 2012

Dear Friends,

As you will have read, we had an excellent piano recital by Janice Gray last Friday.  You can still watch the video on YouTube and make a donation to St. Andrew’s Refugee Services.  Our skype prayer meeting failed to take place this week – as I forgot!  Sorry!  Hopefully, we will continue with our round-the-world prayer next Tuesday!

There are three special events coming up shortly: firstly, we have a joint Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday 22nd.  We join with our friends from All Saint’s Cathedral for this event and this year it will be hosted at St. Andrew’s.  Secondly, on the following Friday we have our Pancake Day!  It will be a little late as it should be on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, when all the left-over fat is traditionally used up before the start of Lent.  Cairo traffic makes it much easy for us to share in this event following the Friday morning worship, however.  Finally, we are hoping to have a retreat to Anafora over the weekend of western Easter.  Please sign up if you would like to be part of this great time together.

We are surrounded by much uncertainty in Egypt at this time, but this Friday we will celebrate the feast of the transfiguation of Jesus.  Let us remember that whatever happens he is with us, and pray for a renewed vision of Jesus in our lives.

Have a great week,

God bless,

Iain

“Shrove Friday”
In many countries, it is traditional to have pancakes on “Shrove Tuesday”, the day before Ash Wedneday.  It is popularly refered to as “Pancake Day”.  On Friday 24th February we will have our Pancake Day at St. Andrew’s following the morning service.  Please bring ready-made pancakes which we can reheat, along with lots of delicious toppings to share.  Sign-up to let us know what you can bring.

St. Andrew’s Community Announcements: February 8, 2012

Dear Friends,

After some violent confrontations in downtown Cairo, all seems to be mostly quiet again although underlying tensions continue and strikes and acts of civil disobedience are planned for Saturday.

This Friday we have Janice Gray’s piano recital in aid of StARS, it should be a very enjoyable afternoon and hopefully again raise a large amount of money.  These difficult times in Cairo are even more challenging for refugees who, already poor in a strange country, have no resources to fall back on or ability to leave if things deteriorate.

Still, in general life continues remarkably normally: we will again have a joint Ash Wednesday service with All Saints Cathedral on 22nd February, and we are planning a short retreat in Anafora over the Easter weekend.  At this week’s skype prayer meeting we were joined by Nancy Schlieve from Wisconsin, Thomas Johnson from California, and Frank Otega and Sally Michael from Cairo, as well as regular skypers from Cairo and elsewhere.

Please keep praying for the situation here in Egypt: one day there is good news, the next bad.  We need to trust in God as we remain in this transitional situation and we still hope that in the end all the upheaval will result in a better, fairer country.

Have a good week,

God bless,

Iain
