E-letter March 24

Hello, St. Andrew’s community –

As we approach the fourth week of Lent, the biblical imagery keeps us moving closer and closer to the cross, where Jesus will be “lifted up” in humiliation and exaltation, Just like Moses’ bronze serpent lifted up in the wilderness, this one lifted up will bring healing and salvation to all who look on him and believe. Within John’s gospel the understanding of belief a relationship with Jesus, talk of judgment is descriptive rather than prescriptive. Rejecting a relationship with Jesus does not call down judgment-rather separation from Jesus is judgment. Through Jesus God offers the world eternal life, which describes a quality of life with Jesus, more than a quantity. This life, consisting of a never-ending relationship with Jesus, brings light out of darkness and healing through the cross.

Intern Tim:

This season of Lent is an interesting one, people take many different angles when going through this season or any seasons of the church. To some, the seasons of the church only can be distinguished as a color change in the church. Purple is the color that is chosen to represent Lent, a normal sign of kingship, during the time of Lent it’s a sign of penitence. Lent in the early church was a time in which candidates and converts prepared themselves for their baptism into the Christian faith. Now we do different things in order to humble ourselves during this season. As we get closer to Easter a time of celebration, my hope is that we don’t take it as another holiday in the church, or color change. It is a time for us as Christians to live in the promise of the resurrection that Christ lives out for us.

Some Words for the Week:

If you have something to do that is worthwhile doing, don’t talk about it but do it. After you have done it, your friends and enemies will talk about it- by George W. Blount
